Kobe Bryant’s first book: how he prepared, studied opponents, and played through pain — with twenty years of photographs.
What this book is about
The Mamba Mentality is Kobe Bryant walking through his own game after retirement. He explains how he watched film, attacked specific match-ups, trained while injured, and separated wanting to win from doing the work to win. Hall of Fame photographer Andrew D. Bernstein shot Kobe from his first NBA photo in 1996 to his last in 2016; the pictures sit next to the notes, not as decoration.
Our take
This is a craft book with a famous name on the cover. It is most alive when Kobe gets granular — footwork, scouting, the boredom of repetition. It is a weak buy if you only want quote cards. Hardcover, visual, better as a gift for someone who actually watches basketball than as a generic “mindset” trophy.
Who should read this
- Basketball fans who want process, not posters
- Athletes and coaches interested in film study and preparation
- Gift buyers for someone who grew up on Lakers / Kobe
- Readers pairing this with Stephen Curry’s Shot Ready
About the author
Kobe Bryant played twenty seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and won five NBA championships. After basketball he wrote, produced, and built the Mamba Mentality idea into a language of daily preparation. He died in 2020; this book is the one he chose to put his name on as author.
